About Judith Porch FSSI and FCLAS

Elected as a Fellow of The Society of Scribes and Illuminators and The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society.

My interest in calligraphy began at an early age when I remember creating flourished letters aged just seven.  I have a lifelong love of drawing, portraiture and botanical art which I enjoy combining with my lettering.

After completing an Art Foundation Course in Swansea I went on to study Calligraphy, Heraldry and Illumination at Reigate School of Art and Design. Since my return to Swansea I have been completing private commissions and have over thirty five years experience of teaching Calligraphy for the City & County of Swansea Lifelong Learning Service.

My work has been exhibited in many exhibitions for both The Calligraphy Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and the Society of Scribes & Illuminators (SSI).

I have completed the Advanced Training Scheme run by the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and won the ‘Most Innovative’ category at the annual CLAS Art and the Letter Exhibition in 2014.

My work relies strongly on my formal training and I love to create large decorative pieces with calligraphy, illustration and illumination. However I am also known for creating innovative pieces such as “Metamorphosis” which combines lettering with thermochromic paper which allows the lettering to appear or disappear depending on the temperature of the surface. I encourage my students to participate in order to develop their skills and broaden their outlook of calligraphy.

I was a Finalist in the Learning & Work “Inspire” Tutor of the Year Awards.
